Anonymous asked: Considering that Daredevil can do more with his senses than regular people, isn't it a little offensive that he pretends to be handicapped? He is technically blind, but he's not really disadvantaged by it.
bloody gonkIs it really possible to be “technically blind”?
I wonder how Anon thinks Daredevil is being offensive? His secret identity was tied to being a person who lost his eye sight during childhood. Was he supposed to have blown his cover? Should he also have let everyone know he is a ninja?
I wonder how much time this person spends finding this to be offended by?
He’s still impaired in many ways. He can’t drive or see colors. He can’t read screens. If it’s raining or loud his radar sense doesn’t work. He can’t use mirrors and windows are “translucent” at best. And super sensitive senses can be disabling in and of themselves, as has been shown in many Daredevil comics. I have to wonder how much daredevil this person has actually read.
I am pretty sure showing he/she was enlightened and cared about the plight of the truly handicapped was more important.
Wow, people’s stupidity level never ceases to amaze me.

A lot of people think Daredevil is offensive, but they mostly are people who don’t really know the comic or its history:
1. The first DD came out in 1964. Even with superpowers, the hero of this book is a blind man. Who also happens to be one of the best lawyers in town. In 1964.
2. The fact that he is stuck somewhere between being actually blind and able to do things blind people can’t is adressed from time to time in the book (a lot more in vol.3, I’ll advise anon to try it) and I can cite one of Miller’s issue when Matt explains that he kept his secret identity as a blind man because when he is Matt Murdock he doesn’t have to pretend he’s not blind.
3.There are blind readers of Daredevil; actually a lot at least in the US. The first issue of vol.3 was offered in audio-description and some people are trying to get Netflix to offer this for their new show as well.
(all info can be found on www.manwithoutfear.com)
Of course, it’s sometimes somewhat very badly handled in the books, and of course we are in a superhero universe. So some people will still find it offensive, and it’s their right. Anyone can find anything offensive, but I wish they would try to learn more about it before trashing it :)1. Yeah! Also, I think Stan Lee’s even said they got a lot of positive feedback back then…
2. That’s one of the reasons I appreciate Waid’s run. He doesn’t ignore the actual problems Matt would face just because SUPER SENSES.
3. I’m legally blind and I’ve been reading the series since I was about sixteen. (I’m 29 now.) I’m hoping that Netflix has a DVS (audio description) option for the shows. That would be cool.
